The Campbell Memorial Oration

چکیده

TIERE is perhaps no literature dealing with specific disease addressed to the patient so voluminous as that on the subject of diabetes. This can probably be explained by the fact that there is no other disease in which the physician has to rely, to the same extent, upon self-treatment by the patient. Yet in spite of the plethora of books, this small volume, written by a certified dietitian, will find a welcome as a suitable book to offer diabetic patients. It is a simple introduction to diabetic diet and cookery. It describes the principles of diet, and in it there is given a goodly number of simple recipes of easy preparation. After each recipe is given the food-value in carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, together with the caloric value. The recipes are preceded by short abstracts from major books on basic considerations in diabetic dietary. R. H. H.

I AM deeply sensible of the great honour the executive committee and trustees of the Robert Campbell Memorial Fund have done me by the award of the Memorial Prize and Medal. Each recipient has the duty of delivering the Robert Campbell Memorial Oration before the Ulster Medical Society, of which Robert Campbell was President in the session 1918-19. It gives me especial pleasure that the honour ...

The Two Cultures

My colleagues could have conferred no greater honour on me than to ask me to deliver this year's Campbell Memorial Oration. Little did I think when, as a first-year hospital student, I was allocated to Robert Campbell as surgical dresser, that I should be standing here tonight as Campbell orator. My only wish is that I could have been more worthy to follow in the footsteps of those distinguishe...

And in 1918 in those same wards we saw dozens of men die from the deadly streptococcus pneumonia that so frequently followed influenza dutring the epidemic. The end of th...

I FEEL that I should open my remarks to you this evening by expressing sincere appreciation of the honour conferred upon me by the Robert Campbell Memorial Committee in inviting me to address you. It is particularly gratifying to be accorded this honour in the city where I obtained my qualification. This oration has a twofold purpose: its more important function is the commemoration of the man ...

Tradition also dictates that the presentation is not a lecture. It is an oration and perhaps this is as well. In July 2005, in the Guardian, David Hare mused on the word “lecture”. He wondered when it acquired its negative connotations. He recalled a review of one of his plays: “it was more like a lecture than a play”’ lectures may be remembered for long windedness, boredom and scolding. Perhap...
